It’s For Them, Michael

Jerry Seinfeld’s web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is worth watching for so many reasons, but it’s the last episode of the first season that I can’t stop thinking about. For a show with a silly premise, the series features some pretty deep conversations about the creative process. In Episode 6, Seinfeld spends time with Michael Richards and their conversation is so intense, sweet and honest that I was moved to tears the first time I watched it and was compelled to watch it again.

In the course of conversation, coffeeRichards talks about how performance was always a struggle for him and how he wishes he enjoyed working on the “Seinfeld” series more than he did. Seinfeld stops him and says he doesn’t believe in judging process: “We’re all trying to get to the same island. Whether you swim, fly, surf or skydive in, it doesn’t matter. What matters is when the red light comes on…Our job was not for us to enjoy. Our job was to make sure they enjoyed.”

And then Richards touches on the meltdown he had doing stand-up at a comedy club, when he broke down in a shower of expletives and racial slurs aimed at some disrespectful audience members. And he says he can see how this illustrates Jerry’s point. He admits his response was selfish and that he took the audience response too personally. “I worked selfishly, not selflessly.”

It’s for them…
